Super Bowl, it's a brand name, not an adjective

...those words from Keith Olbermann, when he was one of the top dogs on SportsCenter, rang true in the 90s.

These days, we're all nuts about the Super Bowl all week long. I surprised, and pleased, that ESPN didn't go too far overboard on SportsCenter with its media day wrap-ups. I think they've let NFL Network control that hype machine. I was disappointed with how ESPN went over-the-top with its coverage when Bobby Knight got the attention of one of his players by bumping him on the chin... then found every possible way of dissecting previous similar incidents. This is the first time SC disappointed me. Come on, let Coach Knight be Coach Knight. Every time he does something that could result in a penalty, the media's gonna jump on him one way or another. Will recycling every one of Knight's chair throws and recapping all his penalties bring SC more ratings? Not from this viewer. Show more bowling.

Back to the Super Bowl. Thankfully, the games have been close the last few years. This one will be, as well.

Peyton will have two TD passes. Grossman will get picked off twice, but they won't be his fault. Vinatieri will ice the game with a late field goal. Devin Hester will be held in check.

Colts 27, Bears 23

Okie Dokie...

Those of you who remember my absence due to surgery a month ago, everything has checked up well... and I'm sleeping a lot better.

I'm on my second stint of allergy shots, hoping that my immunity rebuilds. My first stint lasted 11 years, and wore off within 4 years. I'm allergic to quite a few fruits and vegetables now... which is painful when I have a big caesar salad sitting in front of me.

Another thing I can't stand is cigarette smoke. You know I love bowling, but the problem with bowling centers in Pennsylvania is all of the smoking that's allowed. Spend 10 minutes in most bowling centers, and your clothes are soaked in smoke. I belong to one league that is now non-smoking... thankfully. The governing body of bowling (USBC) does not permit any smoking in areas where youth are bowling in certified leagues, tournaments, or other competition. I hope to our legislators get to work soon on anti-smoking legislation. Maryland, New York, and New Jersey no longer allow indoor smoking (except in the Atlantic City casinos). Of course, PA is behind. Governor Rendell says it's one of his priorities this term... I hope it's more like this year.

I just heard that giving up smoking before you turn 35 is most beneficial to your health. Thankfully, almost all of my relatives have given it up.

Talk with you tonight at 6:00. In the meantime, quit smoking and buckle up.

Simple skills...

I had a decent weekend, but how the weekend wrapped up reminded me of why I'm worried about the future... and, of all places, at McDonald's.

In the past year or so, I've had two eye-opening moments at two of Ronald McDonald's Harrisburg-area dining places.

Experience #1: My drive-thru order was $6.36... I gave the cashier $6.51, so I could 15 cents change back. He had no idea what I gave him, and gave me back the wrong change. This was already after I had waited 3 minutes for my dollar-menu order. After explaining and still getting the wrong change back, I just took the 10-cent loss and moved on, so that the line of cars behind me wouldn't get angry.

Experience #2: Last night, I went inside. I usually do when I notice nobody at the line inside... it usually means quick service. Quick, yes. Accurate, maybe. The first thing I told the guy was that the order was 'to go.' I admit, I'm very finicky when it comes to food. I ordered a chesseburger, no pickles, and two chicken sandwiches, plain. After my order, the gentleman asks, "For here or to go?" I kindly repeated my "to go" opening statement, then wondered how this order was gonna get screwed up. My fears heightened when the order was completed in under 45 seconds. I get out to my car, pickles on the cheeseburger. I know, it's probably easier just to pick them off myself.

The point is that some of our young people aren't grasping the simple concepts... listening, counting, etc. This wasn't a case of muffled drive-up speaker, this was face to face. I doubt they tried to pull a fast one on me thinking, "This guy won't care... it's not like he's gonna call our boss and get us fired." I almost did with experience #1.

It should be law that children who don't get a perfect score on their standardized math tests in 8th grade can't get working papers until they do. Honestly, they'll have a hard time getting anywhere without simple skills like that.

Just my 2 cents... counted correctly.
