Allow me to share some thoughts about a man who means a lot to me. He was the chairman of the Mass Communications Department at King's College. He now produces and hosts Windsor Park Stories on WBRE-TV Sundays at 11:30am. Dr. Tony Mussari guided me through one of the toughest school years of my life... my last one. Between Senior Seminar, my internship, and the death of my grandfather, he and his wife, Kitch, provided with a lot of help, challenges, and inspiration.
It's now 10 years since I received my diploma... and nearly blacked out when I got on stage, because I couldn't believe I finally reached the summit. When Doc read my name, the journey was complete, and my adult life officially started.
I got an e-mail from him tonight, as part of the big list of people he e-mails every week with show highlights. Tomorrow, he goes in for open-heart surgery. I couldn't help but try to reply quick enough that he would read it before going to bed. I did, and he responded in his usual simple, yet elegant manner.
Among his teachings was the Stephen Covey book, "7 Habits of Highly Effective People." He gave us a video reminding us in the Class of 1997 of those seven habits.
Doc taught me the power of affirmation. It's amazing how much weight the phrase "Thank you" carries. I carry that with me every day.
I just had to watch that video again tonight. I miss the 39 people I spent so much time with. In the last few years, I've only seen two of them and gotten e-mails from one or two others.
